How to Build a Dental Portfolio for UK Associate and Locum Applications

When you apply for an associate or locum position in the UK, the principal has already read a hundred CVs that look like yours. GDC number, VT/DFT year, a list of practices. What they cannot tell from a CV is the one thing they actually care about: can you do the work?

A clinical case portfolio answers that question before you walk through the door. Here is how to build one that gets you the interview — and the chair.

Why a portfolio beats a CV in UK dentistry

Principals hiring associates are taking a commercial risk. A weak associate means remakes, complaints, and unhappy patients on their list. A portfolio of documented cases — before, during, and after — de-risks that decision. It is the difference between "trust me" and "here, look."

For locums especially, where you may work a single day at a practice you have never seen, a portfolio URL on your CV signals professionalism and lets a practice manager vet your work in thirty seconds.

What to include

Aim for 8–12 cases that show range, not volume:

  • A composite or anterior restoration — shade matching and margins are what principals scrutinise first.
  • An endodontic case with a pre-op and post-op radiograph.
  • A simple ortho or aligner case if you have one, with a clear before/after arc.
  • A hygiene/perio journey documented over a few visits.
  • One "problem" case — a tricky extraction or a remake you rescued. Honesty about difficulty reads as competence, not weakness.

For each case, capture a standardised set: frontal retracted, upper occlusal, and a relevant lateral. Consistency matters more than a perfect single shot.

Get the consent right first

You cannot publish patient images — even anonymised intra-oral shots — without appropriate consent. Record it explicitly, log the date, and keep it with the images. This is a GDC standards and UK GDPR requirement, not an optional nicety, and getting it wrong turns a portfolio into a liability.

Present it where a principal can actually open it

A PDF attachment gets lost. A phone gallery is awkward to hand across a desk. The strongest format is a professional URL you own that you can put directly on your CV — one link a practice manager can open on any device.

That is exactly what DentalCloud gives each dentist: a clean page (dentalcloud.io/dr/your-name) where your cases live, organised by patient, with consent tracked and images stored securely in the UK. When a principal asks "show me your work," you send one link.

Start now, not when you are job-hunting

The best time to start documenting is your current post, while you have patients in the chair. Photograph your next five cases with a clear visual arc. By the time you are applying, you will have a portfolio that does your selling for you — and unlike a CV, it improves every week.
